Background information

Bobby has an eyesight condition called Stargardt’s Macular Dystrophy which prevents him from sight-reading music and carrying out many everyday tasks. Living with a degenerative condition which restricts his central vision means he cannot read music, he sometimes struggle to see the keyboard and he finds identifying faces very difficult. But over the years he has developed a multitude of techniques that enable him to carry out his work, and he believes that this gives him a unique opportunity to approach music from a different angle, that has helped his aural skills develop to an extraordinarily high level. He holds a 1st-class BA in Music from Oxford University and trained in Music Production and Sound Engineering at Abbey Road Institute.

Bobby is a firm believer in keeping a positive attitude and believes that having low vision should not hold you back from doing the things that you love! He already had fascinations with music theory, the piano and singing when he started losing his sight aged nine or ten, and at that age the brain is still very adaptable. As it became progressively harder and slower for him to see sheet music, it became easier and faster to pick things up by ear and commit to memory. Now he plays all his piano gigs and theatre shows from memory, with a wide-array of songs available for him to perform and he can even take requests provided he has heard the song a handful of times.
